03. Motivation Theories

There are three type of Motivational Theories

01. Hierarchy of Needs Theory by Abraham Maslow.

02. Two Factor Theory by Fredrick Herzberg.

03.  X and Y theory by Douglas McGeorge

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow's hypothesis is based on the idea that people aspire to achieve more in life, and their demands are prioritized based on their importance. Content theories of job satisfaction are based on Maslow's hierarchy of wants and revolve around employees' requirements and the variables that provide them with a reasonable level of fulfilment. Maslow developed the following theory based on human beings' basic physical, biological, social, and psychological needs. The theory divides individual needs into categories and optimizes their achievement. (Badubi, 2017)

  • *    Physiological requirements (food, shelter, clothing);
  • *    safety and security needs (physical protection);
  • *    social needs (connection with others);
  • *    esteem needs (getting attention from others);
  • *    self-actualization needs

        are the categories in order of diminishing priority

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs forms the basis of theories that try to explain job satisfaction.

 All people, have needs that have to be satisfied. Besides the basic needs for food, shelter, and clothing, safety from physical harm and social interaction, they also need recognition and appreciation.(Badubi, 2017)

  1. The biggest disadvantage of this theory is that not all individuals think in the same way hence for some individuals social affection and respect is more important than safety needs and that is the reason why one sees many people do grand ceremony of their children’s birthdays or marriages or purchasing expensive cars in order to show off to society before buying insurance plan for family or purchasing a house for the family as they get more satisfaction from showing off to society than fulfilling safety needs of the family. Another limitation of this theory is that there are bound to be cultural differences when this theory is applied to different nations as each nation or country has different culture. It is very difficult to measure the satisfaction which one gets after satisfying each level of need as it is subjective in nature because it deals with human mind which cannot be predicted by any machine or method. 1. On the other hand, that is also true. People have different desires in one way or another. Especially in an Asian country like ours, people live by defeating each other. So sometimes they want to show society their assets rather than their basic needs. Even a simple theory, as you say, varies from person to person.

  2. Maslow's theory has many advantages, Maslow's Theory of Motivation is that it is very simple to understand and even normal people can understand and relate to this theory. And that it gives consideration to basic human nature that is demanding more as lower-level needs are satisfied.

    1. I think so too. This theory is something that anyone can easily understand. And even if it is not explained theoretically, this is how the motivation of an organization works, right?
