X and Y theory by Douglas McGeorge

05. X and Y theory by Douglas McGeorge

The importance of organizational culture cannot be stressed enough. Cult of the organization In his 1960 book "The Human Side of Enterprise," Douglas McGregor, an American social psychologist, introduced his famous X-Y hypothesis. While more recent research has cast doubt on the model's rigidity, McGregor's X-Y Theory remains a strong foundation from which to construct positive management styles and practices. McGregor's XY Theory is still relevant to organizational development and cultural improvement. Here, the function of culture is critical.

McGregor's X-Y theory is a helpful and straightforward reminder of the basic norms for managing people, which are all too readily lost in the rush of day-to-day business.

His thoughts propose that there are two basic methods of people management:

v Many managers follow Theory X and have terrible results as a result.

v Theory Y, which creates greater results, is used by enlightened managers.

People are able to   grow and develop as a result of their performance and results.

McGregor's thoughts are closely related to today's understanding of the psychological contract, which offers a variety of perspectives on the unhelpful nature of X-theory leadership and the positive, constructive character of Y-theory leadership.(McGregor’s XY Theory of Management, 2017)

  1. The biggest disadvantage of theory X is that it is based on many assumptions that are not entirely true and hence some of the assumptions of theory X like workers being not intelligent, them being poor decision-makers, not able to do any work without supervision are absurd as some workers may have this trait but to generalize and apply to every worker is a limitation which makes the applicability of this theory difficult. 2. The advantage of using theories X and Y are that they are easier to understand. It can help managers focus on the different ways people work. Theory Y is the theory that explains its popularity and shows a much more positive management style than X. It allows the employee to gain some freedom and responsibility.

  3. This theory is based on assumptions. Not all assumptions made are true. Therefore, this principle is not true for every employee

    1. One thing I also think about when compared to other principles is that this is not practical. There are no disadvantages. But it is not a very successful method.
